A Busy Week On and Off the Field

This week at Stowmarket RUFC has been a vibrant mix of remembrance, preparation, and community spirit, all leading up to a weekend full of rugby action and celebrations.

We started the week by honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Phil Rudland represented the club at Stowmarket Town Council’s remembrance service, presenting a wreath on behalf of Stowmarket RUFC. A group of players, volunteers, and supporters also attended the Salvation Army’s Armistice Day service, paying their respects and showcasing the unity and community ethos that lies at the heart of our club.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, preparations have been in full swing. Melanie has been working tirelessly to finalize plans for our upcoming wreath-making evenings, organizing a festive Christmas Movie Night for our youth section and supporters, and laying the groundwork for other exciting events. Dan and Jack have started the plans for the much-anticipated Brutal Bingo Night, hosted by our 1st XV captain’s sponsor, Russell Valentino Hall, whilst Suzanne and Chloe have made the first steps in planning the club's first Drag evening (a little different to the lads in dresses like we can expect this weekend for Ladies Day).

On the rugby front, training has been a highlight of the week. A defensive focus helped the team sharpen their skills for the weekend, and the energy on the field was matched only by the camaraderie off it. Players smashed into each other during drills, laughed, and, as always, enjoyed a post-training beer together.

This Saturday promises a packed schedule of rugby, both on and off the field. Our 1st XV returns to Phoenix Park to face Woodford RFC in what promises to be an exciting game. With a solid week of preparation behind them, the team is eager to build on the promise shown in last week’s performance against Brentwood. Kick-off is at 2:00 PM, and we’re expecting a lively crowd, especially as this game coincides with our Ladies Day celebrations.

Ladies Day is a special occasion where we celebrate the incredible women of Stowmarket RUFC—those who dedicate their time and effort to support the players and keep the club running smoothly. Guests will enjoy a Boozy Afternoon Tea complete with prosecco, sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes, and more. The day will also feature music, games, and a raffle sponsored by Edmunds Cocktails.

While the 1st XV plays at home, our 2nd XV will be on the road, traveling to Felixstowe for their next fixture. After a dominant win last weekend, they’ll be looking to continue their climb up the table.

The action doesn’t stop there. On Sunday, our minis and youth teams take center stage. The minis will be training at Phoenix Park, while the U13s travel to Mersea Island, the U15s host Mersea Island at home, and the U16s head to the Eastern Counties Festival. It’s a packed schedule, and we wish the best of luck to all our players, from seniors to minis.

As always, the clubhouse will be buzzing with supporters and rugby fans. Alongside our senior matches, the clubhouse will be showing international fixtures, starting Friday night with Ireland vs. Argentina at 8:10 PM. Saturday’s viewing schedule includes Scotland vs. Portugal at 3:10 PM, England vs. South Africa at 5:40 PM, and France vs. New Zealand at 8:10 PM.

We hope to see many of you at Phoenix Park this weekend, whether you’re there to cheer on the 1st XV, participate in Ladies Day, or simply soak in the atmosphere. Let’s rally behind our teams, enjoy some fantastic rugby, and celebrate what makes Stowmarket RUFC such a special club.

Here’s to a weekend full of energy, passion, and hopefully, some big wins!
